A fantastic book, not the least for the writing style Very engaging, especially considering the time period he s writing about Other historians have talked about the pre chronicle history of the people they re writing about, and usually it s the least interesting part of the book But the author s writing style alone made the book enjoyable to read.Along with that, a very informative book on the subject It s fairly brief, I m guessing for two reasons one, there isn t that much source information, and two, he covers a lot of this in a larger book, which I ll have to get next. One thing I found especially interesting was the observation in the new introduction to this edition It says what the book originally lacked was much of the archaeological information we now have, yet his conclusions still hold up in fact, were confirmed by the archaeology So this work is a real testament to how good an historian Thompson really was.
