This was a good read Although I hadn t read Sisters Lovers, I was able to follow the story with no issues The main characters were enjoyable, and sometimes delightfully irritating, i.e., Beverly She was so self righteous for someone who knew nothing about real love or good relationships Charmaine loved getting married In her quest to find the one, she was at times too tolerant, but in the end, she learned to balance tolerance patience.Evelyn needed a real life and finally got one I wanted to stand up and cheer Way to go girl The peripheral characters husbands, boyfriends, other family were all so diverse and contributed well to the story.I may have to go back and read Ms Briscoe s first book.

I am sure that I read the first book and I m almost certain that I enjoyed it I m sure there was a time in my life that Connie Briscoe was one of my favorite authors However, I didn t find this particular book very engaging Some of the dialogue was unrealistic and even the characters internal dialogues were wooden and not real enough for my tastes There were few surprises in the storyline It was very predictable and overall the book was just okay I had to almost force myself to finish it Perhaps it s not the author s style that has changed but my taste in literature.

Sisters and HusbandsPLOT Ten years later from the first novel Sisters and Lovers , Beverly has FINALLY found the love of her life, Julian Now after three previous engagements, she s ready to walk down the aisle Or is she Even though she has the perfect man in her life how can she ignore all the signs going on around her that even the most stable marriage she holds to the highest standard is falling apart Her oldest sister Evelyn and her husband have separated Her other sister Charlene is on husband number 4 and they re having issues about how to parent his daughter And then there s an issue of infidelity with her best friend Valerie MY THOUGHTS Beverly I m glad this didn t end how I thought it was gonna end with its beginning I liked Julian for Beverly I liked that he was a geek and into animation and graphics I thought that was HOT And their personal chemistry was sexy as well as the sex scenes I was groaning thinking ok Yes Your sisters are going through it and YES your gonna go through it No relationship is perfect No marriage is perfect But you d be a FOOL to let a good man like that get away And I thought she was And over what Because he didn t tell her that her friend had feelings for him That s something to be a little irritated about for a hot second Not something to call off a marriage for And other than not telling her that it seemed like she and Julian had really good communication as well as sex What I m learning is that sometimes they don t see things like we do What we may find very important to know they think is minor And I thought their history was gonna be they dated and then he left her after he meets Beverly Even that they might have slept together Why couldn t Valerie just been up front and say she had feelings for Julian when Beverly asked her She can t blame Beverly because SHE wasn t upfront about how she felt You snooze you lose as the saying goes All these excess reasons Beverly used though to get out of marrying Julian I felt were probably just cold feet And I can t say I blame her I can just imagine being in her shoes and about to become a first time wife Especially since we are about the same age She had a happy ending and I m glad for that Evelyn I never saw her and Kevin as the ideal marriage Evelyn and Kevin even in Sisters and Lovers didn t have any spark to me or chemistry Up until the last chapter where after she let s go a little and they go in the house to make love Kevin seemed passionate about spending time with Chrissy than he did Evelyn I was kind of at odds with his sudden abrupt change of character Evelyn as a character hasn t changed that much Every time we read about her emphasis is being placed on some expensive thing she owns So we see that s what she values I kind of understood where Kevin was coming from in getting sick of everything being about materialism, but in the same breath, even he said that s who you are and I can t expect you to change That s who you married a material girl And possibly you turned her into that I was trying to think in my head what she could have done to meet him halfway to save her marriage Should she have given up the house in order for a smaller place or done some traveling with him But then, in the end, I guess it wouldn t have made much of a difference I did feel bad for the way he led her on to believe he needed time to think but did he really led her on or did she have hopes of fixing what she already knew was LONG gone He already told her he wasn t attracted to her any At this point, I think she just should have left and let go But I do understand her desire to fight for her marriage despite the ugliness of what was staring her right in the face Which is what makes it so heartbreaking But I think Evelyn will be ok She seems to be on the right track with her new love interest Charlene As for Charlene I don t have kids But I think she did a great job She stuck up for her son She tried to come up with an alternative compromise with Kenny and Tiffany argued She tried to see things from her husband s side and compromise And then she set down rules with Tiffany and actually got through to her a little I think her husband was a little immature to have a temper tantrum after a disagreement and leave to go stay with his mama rolling my eyes And also I m a little surprised that after living with Kenny for over a year not realizing himself that he didn t hit his daughter and that she might have just exaggerated and that maybe they were just playing and she got hit by accident I can see where Tiffany gets being a drama queen from Tyrone s a bit of one himself Marriages Then there was the talk about how people in this generation are quick to give up on marriages and walk away as in comparison to our parents generation that stuck things out And sadly that s true Not only in marriages don t people stick it out nor do they in dating It s a talk I ve had with a girlfriend of mine many a time And we agreed it has something to do with the ENDLESS amount of choices available through means like social media Why stick around and stick it out when you can have a new thing just waiting around the corner with open arms and legs.RATING 7

Three sister and three relationships Years have passed since we met these sisters in Sisters and Lovers How have they grown, how have their relationships grown with each other and with the men in their life I enjoyed this much better than the book before.

It s nice to follow up on the three sisters from Sisters and Lovers, and I found the sequel even engaging than the original Still, the relationships in this book are problematic, and I m not sure whether the author knows so, or whether the end is intended as happily ever after Kevin and Evelyn growing apart gives Evelyn the needed room for developing independence This independence is a theme in a number of Briscoe s books, and it s one of the reasons I read her over and over again But this particular deployment is unconvincing Kevin s actions and transformation are so confusing that Evelyn s independence seems contrived As for Charmaine, she and Tyrone never demonstrate an ability to talk about how to set boundaries with Tyrone s daughter, and the armistice between his daughter and Charmaine at the very end seems like a deus ex machina to make the relationship appear healthy Beverly s story is definitely supposed to be the happiest of the three, and it very nearly is But the secret her fiance kept seems serious to me than it does to her and her sisters.Relationships are hard and complex, and that complexity is well shown by this novel I just worry about the disparity between the tone and the message I marked it four stars, because it s a book I ll read over and over again The dialogue is delightful, the story is well written, the chronological structure is smart and effective, the characters have grown and changed since the first book, and the relationship between the three sisters is a thing of beauty But none of their partners are Prince Charming, and I just hope that they, the author, and the other readers know that.Feminist rubric Positives1 Womens success outside of romance The womens work lives are highlighted less than in the previous book, but they are still definitely working women whose jobs do than just provide a change of scene from interacting with their partner.2 Consensual sex The sex is consensual, and the women are active instigators rather than passive recipients No slut shaming, no sexual hang ups, and no forcing themselves to do things to please their men These women are genuinely confident and comfortable with their sexuality Love it.3 Positive relationships with other women The sisters relationship is the biggest strength of this book There is much understanding, kindness, and support than in Sisters and Lovers I loved Valerie and Beverly s relationship in Sisters and Lovers, so I m sad that had to be sacrificed on the altar of romantic drama, but the sisters strengthened relationship makes up for it.4 Passes Bechdel test.5 Characters are racially and or culturally diverse without being stereotypes and without that being their main characteristic.Neutral1 Self love not explicitly discussed.2 No discussion of systems of oppression or toxic ideals e.g kyriarchy, beauty myth.Negatives1 Virulent misogyny Briscoe does give Valerie a chance to explain her side of the story and gain some of the reader s compassion, but her explanation is weak and used to characterize her as a fundamentally untrustworthy friend rather than a person who made a mistake Even in cases where the characters are so black and white and the hatred is justified, I don t need misogyny in my romances I get it, like, everywhere else.2 Non consensual relationshipping There are few examples of couples working together to make changes in their relationships, and the main dynamic for Charmaine and Evelyn s relationships is that of a constant power struggle.3 Appearance generally tied to male approval or disapproval.

Beverly is engaged to be married to Julian Will she go through with the ceremony or run away like she did twice before After three divorces, Charmaine is married again and this time she s determined to make it work But there are problems that come along with blended families Will she and her husband, Tyrone, ever be able to see eye to eye when it comes to the stepchildren Evelyn has been with her husband, Kevin, nearly twenty five years and even though the relationship hasn t been at its best for some time, she d like to remain married Will the marriage stay together or will they end up in divorce court Witnessing Charmaine and Evelyn s marital problems made Beverly think seriously about the choice she was about to make and the thought of marriage began to frighten her Beverly was focusing too much on other people s relationships She wasn t those women and Julian wasn t those men It was clear to see that Beverly was afraid of commitment It seemed she expected marriage to be without problems, but there are no perfect marriages because there are no perfect people Her relationship with Julian seemed like it was about lust than love, though, but I could be wrong These two unmarried people claimed they were Christians, but all I ll say about that is, I m not gonna judge em What Evelyn went through with Kevin was bothersome Her husband was taking her for granted and he was being immature and selfish a big baby I m glad Evelyn found someone to confide in.Charmaine s situation was most interesting I m sure that was because of the way she spoke up for herself and for her son, but mostly because teens, Kenny and Tiffany, were part of the story I couldn t turn the pages fast enough, wanting to find out what was going to happen next with this blended family At one point, I actually spoke to the book the way I talk to the television when I m into a good show or movie I was like, Tyrone better not put his hands on Kenny Charmaine would have never allowed that and I would have been highly upset.I still remember that I bought Sisters Lovers as soon as the hardcover was released back in the 90 s, and I still remember that I loved it My reading tastes have changed since then and now, when it comes to women s fiction, I read mostly Christian fiction But since I did read Sisters Lovers and enjoyed it back then, I decided to buy the sequel Just because a story doesn t fall under the Christian fiction genre, that doesn t mean it will have the most obscene words or even any profanity at all This one does, though not a little, but not way too much, meaning I could read quite a few pages without coming to the words I can t stand to hear or read and needed to overlook There is also quite a bit of sex talk and sex scenes throughout that, most times, seemed to be about satisfying the flesh than an expression of love.My particular reading taste aside, Sisters Husbands was an entertaining story I liked the sisters close relationship They can be honest with each other no matter how much one might hurt the other and they will keep speaking after all is said and done Nobody holds anything against anybody My favorite sister is Charmaine She can have a nasty mouth at times something she might want to work on, especially since she doesn t want to hear bad language coming out of her son s mouth but she s bold, confident and funny Also, the discussions about marriage and divorce were interesting and informative.

IQ So she moved the line between what s acceptable and what isn t, Evelyn said Or erased it altogether, Beverly added 87 The non English major in me is resurfacing and the one who barely attention to Language Arts classes in middle school because I think there s a term to describe what I m about to say but I have no idea what it is This book reads as though the author wrote chapters at random and then forgot to delete the repetitive parts when she put it all together And since I read two Briscoe books back to back it was a pattern I was able to pick up on Additionally, when she wasn t repeating story background information, she was having her characters constantly repeat said information The statistic about Black couples divorcing often than white couples was repeated throughout the book at least three times The author also wastes a lot of time describing their outfits she doesn t use brand names either and the clothes did not support any of the conversations story lines so what was the point , people sharing happy glances and constantly offering profound thoughts unprompted on marriage and divorce. In my review of the first book I mentioned my fear that the trifling male characters would re emerge in this book Thankfully they do not and Charmaine is now my favorite character since she has come into her own post Clarence I appreciated the author using the sisters to tell Beverly how ridiculous she was about her marriage fears and trying to tell her not to compare her upcoming nuptials to the marriages of her sisters Evelyn and Kevin made sense to me, he was starting to change in the last book so I found his character s trajectory non too jarring And unlike Barbara Bradford, I was thrilled from beginning to end with Evelyn I think the moral of the Briscoe story for me is that I dislike her writing style and that she doesn t always do a good job juggling multiple characters but her books are always entertaining and provide a picture of a brief moment in time of a group of people ignored by mainstream media i.e ordinary Black women in the 90s Plus all her characters own their sexuality which I love.

Sisters Husbands is the long awaited sequel to Connie Briscoe s first novel, Sister s Lovers, which was published than 10 years ago This story about Evelyn, Charmaine, and Beverly three very close sisters, focuses on the month leading up to Beverly s wedding. In her late 30s, this is Beverly s third engagement, so everyone is watching for signs of cold feet But Beverly is not concerned Julian is the most wonderful man she has ever been with, considerate, caring, sexy and with a great career that he loves However, she starts to question the entire institution of marriage and lifetime monogamy when cracks begin to show in both of sisters marriages, especially the than 20 year union of Evelyn and her seemingly fabulous husband Kevin The story is filled with situations of life in the twenty first century, balancing career and family, blending families with children from previous relationships, sharing custody, being an empty nester, possible physical abuse, excessive materialism, and good old fashioned family gatherings with traditional food and games It was interesting to see how three women, raised in the same home with the same basic values would handle situations differently and have such different reactions and points of view No matter what happens however, they support each other and will fight for each other, each in her own way, aggressively by Charmaine, Evelyn the family counselor seeing both points of view, and Beverly, having never been married, looking at many things through rose colored glasses, although standing by her sisters and doing what she can in a much calmer tone than Charmaine Of course I m not going to say what happens with each of the sisters marriages, but I will tell you that it s interesting to see the choices each makes and why.Sisters Husbands is a really great read, and I wish I had read Sisters Lovers first to see the changes 10 years have made in the sisters and their points of view.

Sisters and Husbands chronicles a month in the life of the Jordan sisters Evelyn, Charmaine, and Beverly A month that just happens to be the four weeks preceding Beverly s wedding The eldest Jordan sisters are married, Evelyn for than 20 years and Charmaine is a newlywed but not new to marriage, this is her fourth husband. The story could be a very good one I believe, but all I came away with was total irritation, particularly with our main character Beverly Although there is an ensemble cast of sorts, the main character would be Beverly this is her story She is insecure and while this is her first marriage, Beverly is no stranger to being engaged this is her third engagement.Briscoe does a good job of interweaving the three stories, and I won t go into detail so as not to spoil it for anyone, but the stitches she uses are like a whip stitch, when a surged stitch would add depth. Each of the sisters is struggling with relationship issues, some than others and for varying reasons The problem for gun shy Beverly is that she begins to live vicariously through her sisters which leads to drama in her own relationship The problems they each face are common to many couples, but I believe the novel would have served the reader better if depth had been built into the characters. This would have produced a longer book, but I think a fulfilling read.At 273 pages, Sisters and Husbands was a quick read and would definitely be classified as Chick Lit If you re looking for a story to distract you from the mundane day to day, this would be a good fit, but if you re looking for an in depth look at the relationships between sisters and husbands, you ll be left unsatisfied.

Sisters Husbands by Connie Briscoe is the sequel to Sisters Lovers, which I read a very long time ago Some things came back to me but unlike Midnight and The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah, I did not feel the need to go pull down the first book Sisters Husbands was strong enough to stand on it s own without the prior history. The book picks up with younger sister Beverly preparing for her marriage Beverly, who has a history of getting cold feet, has already called off two weddings, and just when she thinks the third time will be the charm, all hell breaks loose causing her to wonder how realistic is it to have a successful marriage.Although nothing in life is guaranteed, Ms Briscoe does cause us to pause and look at marriage from a different perspective It takes hard work and total committment from both parties, even then there are no guarantees.Sisters Husbands didn t have any wow moments for me but it was a very entertaining read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
