Ugh, guys Just ugh.I really really disliked hated this book I ended up skimming through most of it because it was justugh That one word practically sums it up I would ve given it of a chance if it weren t for the fact that it had NO ORIGINALITY I m serious, NONE I ve seen this exact same storyline in other books series dozens of times.Let s see We have the unsuspecting Mary Sue heroine that goes in denial when she finds out about her powers, and stubbornly wants a normal life And she has two cardboard cutout friends who are pretty much irrelevant in the story And these two enigmatic strangers that she s torn over The bad boy who s an asshole that thinks making girls jealous will make him attractive, or the good boy who s all protective and serious all the time.Yeah, Ariel I know.Anyways, so the characters sucked, yeah, but I still tried to get into the story I really did try Obviously it didn t work I mean, fuck, I can t believe there are so many 3 star ratings for this book It is horrid It has every single YA cliche ever created, all rolled into one big, hot mess. Also, I don t get love triangles e_e In this book s case, it doesn t even deserve to be called a love triangle Most YA these days throw the word love around like it means nothing, and this book is a perfect example.Really, just have a threesome and get over it.

This book went something like this He put forth his hand as he introduced himself, his dark eyes barely visible against the night.I shook his hand, and the skin on skin contact sent a rush of electricity through my body My heart beat faster What was happening to me Oh, how utterly romantic. You knowYou know a book is crappy if the first 30 pages or so are bad Poor female protagonists, broody, moody male characters, insta love, and love triangles

I sure hope this is not another vampire book UPDATE 6 19 So I should have updated this review , like a comment really, when I saw the cover and the synopsis I think when I added this book to my wishlist and made my comment I only had the title to go by What came to mind when I saw the Dark part of the title was my comment above I usually associate the word dark with Vampires Thankfully this book is going to be an angel book I love angel books Plus I never should have doubted this book HarperTeen publishes the best books out there They have yet to publish a bad book, and I don t think they ever will Before I end this paragraph I want to add that the cover is beautiful.

This cover is gorgeous Man it s so pretty with the shiny words and girl at the front pulling a whole Rose in Titanic pose All she really needs is a Jack, but in this case, Sky does not get 1 admirer not just 2 either but 3 guys who want her How do I know this from only reading approximately 44.5 pages into the book Well that s just the problem, A Beautiful Dark is painfully predictable Most of you may not know, but I put off marking this as unfinishable because I was dreading the review, I couldn t do it And while some people think that ripping a book apart is fun, that there s some enjoyment in burning it to flames, page by page there isn t Truth be told, someone worked very hard on this and since Jocelyn Davis has never once offended me in any way shape or form, I think it only fair that I deliver a respectful review Kind of one of those get in, get out deals Hit it What would I do without you boys The main problem with this book seems to be that it is very literally a regurgitation of very YA novel to date with aspects taken moderately from each There was nothing to expect because quite honestly I already knew. For example, Skye has 2 best friends, I will get to them later, but they like to throw her a surprise party every year even though she doesn t like the gatherings AT ALL That point was made so evidently aware to me that I almost shook the friends and slapped them upside the head with salmon for continuing with the tradition when poor Skye looked like she just dreaded the whole ordeal and only went along with it to please them What kind of friends are these view spoiler And the crack about how if they weren t the ones to throw her a party, no one else would Real classy, guys hide spoiler

Hmmmm Did I hate it Nope Did I love it Not really There s just a lot that s been tackled before in Beautiful Dark like, say the presence of three boys who are into the same girl for a variety of reasons Or a girl caught between two opposing sides Or say a girl unable to make her mind up on whom to choose The one thing that had me giggling was their names there s a Skye, an Asher and a a Devyn It s like when I read historical romances there s always a Lady or Lord or Viscount something or other of a frou frou name Here, the names sound so made up I couldn t help but giggle The story itself is nothing new The first half went slow for me but had me curious enough to plod on The second half is where all the big reveals were made The female MC is typical. smart, pretty, almost too perfect She s got friends who are funny and pecuiar in their own right The fact that one of her male BFF s was in to her is not new too, but that she was aware of how he felt instead of being oblivious to the same was a a little refreshing Sadly, that story line belonged to Dan and Cassie, her other best friends Speak of the supporting cast, I felt that Cassie read exactly like Norah s friend in Hush Hush pushy, out there, some times insensitive, but the most plausible of the bunch nonetheless Dan and Ian added the needed sweetness in an otherwise very emo read Her adoptive mother, was absent a lot but when she was in the picture acted the part of protective and caring I reiterate the point of her being absent a lot.The love interests yup, that s plural, were curious too Once I knew what they were, nothing changed for me The reveal just came a little too late I felt I d pieced it all together so many pages before that I didn t care what made them special What s worse is that like Skye, they kept creating drama where none was necessary Why hold back information when they could reveal Anyway, anyone could have pieced it together long before It wasn t all bad though I appreciated the humor that Asher added His quips and non serious manner seriously annoyed me at times, but when he got serious, I was all smiles even if those moments felt a little too dramatic Devyn with his serious side was a tad better, him being torn about what he was to do was so very dramatic The ending was rushed, just like mine to this review is 2.75 5Thanks NETGALLEY

I think it s safe to say that I was disappointed by this book Very disappointed with it.Things that I liked The title, although I didn t really see much relevance to the book The cover Despite the ranting that s about to go down, it was enjoyable and considering that I actually managed to finish it, I think that s a good sign It was hardback, which meant that when I through it across the room in anger, it didn t damage it much Things that I didn t like The plot I mean, seriously Angels are cool and all, but two new hot guys starting in a new school Can t we be a LITTLE creative here Can t the author have slipped them in another way WHY DOES IT ALWAYS HAVE TO BE SCHOOL I get it, school is a big part of a teenagers life trust me, I know but it s just too over used now Also, the fact that Asher watches Skye in her sleep It s creepy, it s disturbing, and I don t like it It makes such a connection with Twilight, don t you think As soon as someone even mentions that, my mind instantly goes to Twilight Don t get me wrong, I love Twilight and I think that they are amazing books, but I don t really need to read about guys watching girls in their sleep in every YA paranormal book It s not exactly necessary, and doesn t drive the plot in any way That s another thing In about 80% of the book, nothing really happened I mean stuff happened, but pointless boring stuff that just made me feeling like throwing the book across the room I actually did, in the end I was so pissed off The ending felt rushed, whilst a lot of the other parts of the book dragged slowly along Characters Devin and Asher, good boy bad boy It kind of reminded me of Luc and Gabe Personal Demons except not as good Skye Skye was alright I didn t hate her, but neither could I relate to her or like her The Aunt Forgot her name I hate it how parents or carers, Skye s parents are dead died in a car crash why is it always a car crash are never actually around in this Don t they take an interest in her life I get that she has a demanding job or whatever, but it s just an excuse that the author has used to not bothering to actually figure out what to do with her Setting Yeah, cold snowy place Whatever Overall thoughts May or may NOT pick up the sequel Depends how desperate for books I am My advice to you Don t read this is you re looking for something unique and good, otherwise it will be a massive disappointment as it was to me.

Disclaimer This review is based off the Uncorrected Proof available on Net Galley This is a debut novel so I will attempt to curb my ire because I know how difficult it is to compose a story, especially if it is the first time you are doing so There will be no vitriol, no vituperation Simply a statement of my reaction and perhaps a mini rant when it is unavoidable. This book is about angels Just so you know and are prepared But before we get to the plot, let s talk about the writing It is extremely raw Ambiguous Cluttered Grammatically creative heh I may read the finished copy to see if the writing issue has been corrected because I really don t think it s fair to judge a book by its uncorrected proof However, since it was available for review in that form, I am forced to say that the writing would benefit from a lot work than it has gotten I usually am not picky about sentence structure etc but when the writing interferes with my understanding of the story, I have to speak out I would give examples but again, I don t want to quote from the proof Before I talk about the mythology and other aspects of the novel, let me address the one issue that made me want to scream into a pillow so I wouldn t scare my family The whole love what would it be There were five, no six people in this love hexagon Let me take a deep breath Okay Let s go.Ian The requisite nice guy who loves the protagonist silently and not so silently but is ultimately treated like yesterday s lunch and gets lost somewhere in the narrative He s palatable actually And kinda nice Only thing is, he doesn t sparkle or have wings and, therefore, does not have a hope against the sparklier beings.Devin He s much appealing of the two but only till you encounter the twist and then it goes all south Predictably, he s beautiful and has a beautiful fated one with whom he is supposed to spend eternity Ash Wow I hated this guy I hated him to the point that bile rose in my throat every time I had to read a scene with him in it He s basically has no qualms using other girls to amuse himself while he waits for Skye to take notice of him become jealous His callousness towards girls does not win him any points Plus when he says to that Skye wearing a tank top in front of him suggests that she WANTS his attention well, that just made me want to hurl And you know what it brought to mind The whole debate of how women are asking to be raped because of the clothes they wear or their lascivious actions Yeah, no Just No Ellie She s a cardboard character Nothing else.Skye Yeah The main character whom I did not like at all In fact, her waffling between all the guys made me want to smack her silly on than one occasion And then she says something to the effect of Ellie latching on to guys she had an interest in As though that was such a bad thing And it s not exactly as if Ash was protesting overmuch, you know The only reason Skye makes that comment is because she doesn t want Ash not while she s deciding between the other members of her fast growing harem but she doesn t want anyone else to have him either Because it may be true love, you know The book does not bring anything new and fresh to the genre It is simply the same old story of one heroine being fought over by two different factions wrapped up in a different package The mythology is barely explained and while in the end, the thread of the narrative gains a spark, it is too late to save the novel Being angelic is so much than having powers Why do they have powers Why is that question not answered It also angered me that the book reasserts the status quo where gender politics is concerned The real bad guy is the girl to whom Devin is fated to be with It is Vicky who is the negative character while the boys retain their prettiness and become tortured by the dueling nature of their mission and the feelings they have for Skye The novel takes the Mean Girl trope to a whole new level and leaves me unimpressed. So there you have it My review I really don t like writing negative reviews, especially when it s a debut novel but I think for an artist to hone their craft, they need to work at it And this book needs a lot work where character development and plot are concerned The writer also needs to become aware of the subtext and what she may be saying without explicitly saying it.

Let s get one thing straight This story needs some original ideas, pronto. Two opposing godly sides Well, that would have been okay, if it weren t for the fact that they re both supposedly hot males who aren t supposed to fall in love with the main girl character ooh la la, it s forbidden but you know, they end up anyways And since they re from opposing sides, well, the girl gets fought over Not romantic at all.And adding in the fact that the girl is a self unknown supernatural Special and unique and beyond control of the otherworldly forces, yet unknowing of it Developing the most powerful and awesome skills that no one had ever had before Perfect small town girl who had a life all planned out not to mention on a straight path to Columbia big deal but got it all disarrayed when hot guys number 1 and number 2 showed up Check.Come on, you can do better than that This book was so predictable And the hot guys weren t even that winsome, either One s a playboy jerk and the other s a stiff, upright nimrod.Give me a decision that will forever change the world and I m all for it Even I would probably do something badass than this girl Home breeding has done her no good, tsk tsk.No, I do not recommend this book What is it with me lately, only coming across not so snappy books
